Interested in being a presenter? We are
seeking presenters for the 2005 NAME Annual conference, July 20 - 23.
Bamfield is at the hub of a diverse and rich profusion of marine habitats.
Nearby are white sand beaches interspersed with rocky shores dissected by
surge channels and tide pools. Several sea caves in the area have been the
subject of research on changes in abundance and distribution of sessile
species in cool, damp, dark environments. Over 50 species of sponges occur
in Execution Rock Cave. Locally, tidal currents sweep the shores which are
lined by suspension feeding rock jingles, mussels, sea cucumbers, porcelain
crabs, and many other creatures. Nearby fjords plunge to depths of several
hundred meters. Deep sea glass sponges and branching corals occur here. To
the northwest are the world renowned Broken Group; part of the Pacific Rim
National Park and a kayaker’s paradise. And to the southwest the craggy
cliffs are exposed to the awesome power of the open Pacific combers.
The Conference Committee invites educators,
scientists, and other interested persons to submit proposals for conference
concurrent sessions. We seek subjects and methods that are relevant to both
formal and informal audiences, and presentations from all subject areas that
will help us “ride the wave” Concurrent sessions will be held in the new Rix
Marine Sciences Discovery Centre in Bamfield July 21 and 22 in the morning
and afternoon. Sessions are 40 minutes long; please indicate if you require
2 back-to-back sessions. There may be opportunities to conduct sessions
directly on docks at the waters edge; let us know if this would work for
you.
This conference will be a remarkable opportunity to
enjoy Canada’s “true” West coast while learning and teaching others about
marine and aquatic education.
Deadline for proposal submission is May 27, 2005.
Submissions should be 100 words
maximum, and should indicate the type of presentation, expected audience and
the AV equipment required/desired.
Note; All presenters (except invited speakers) are
expected to register for the conference.
