Field Trip Details

Research Vessel MV Alta (2 hours) - additional $23 per person
This field trip to the Deer Group Islands entails observing marine mammals and birds and sampling from the sub-tidal environment. The small dredge will show us many different subtidal organisms, and in addition, different birds and mammals can be observed.

Research Vessel Barkley Star (1 hour) - additional $27 per person
This field trip is on the Barkley Star, the Bamfield Marine Sciences’ newest and fastest research vessel. This trip will be either to the Broken Group Islands or down the coast by the West Coast Trail

Brady’s Beach (3.5 hours)
One of the most beautiful beaches around Bamfield, Brady’s Beach is characterized by its picturesque sea stacks, sandy and rocky shores, and is a wonderful place to explore the inter-tidal zone.

Eagle Bay (3.5 hours)
Eagle Bay is a mixed beach with a semi-exposed rocky shore and a semi-protected cobble and sand beach. There is a lot of biodiversity here reflecting the diversity of habitats. This beach has a large diversity of algae and many examples of reds, greens, and browns can be found.

Eelgrass Mapping (3.0 hours)
This is a practical hands-on field trip where you will be contributing to the Bamfield Community Eelgrass Project’s on-going eelgrass mapping and monitoring program. Learn how to determine shoot density, use a GPS, lead-line, quadrats and survey skills.

Mudflat Quadrat Study (3.0 hours)
Simple techniques and cheap readily available equipment to assess populations of mud dwelling animals in different locations and at differing intertidal heights. Includes key to identify common clam species as well as illustrations of other common critters.
