The Pacific blue mussel may be found from northern Alaska to Baja California on rocky shores.  It may be the dominant species in the middle intertidal zone of wave protected waters.   It also occurs on wave exposed coasts but is, typically, less obvious than the large California mussel.    

The Pacific blue mussel also occurs on man made structures such as pilings, floats, and boats.
