In late June and early July the
science camp started and eight students, age
eight to twelve compared the marine habitats in
Sansum Narrows with those in Cowichan Bay. These
habitats include rocky shores and sand-gravel
beaches. It was lots of fun and we learned not to
be mad at clams because they will squirt you in
the face....... We also surveyed eelgrass in
Cowichan Bay. The map to the left shows the
places that we visited. .

| Clam
Survey-The clams that we got are
put in a pie-graphs below. |

| |
| When we carried out the clam survey
we used the following procedure. First we took a
1/15 square meter frame. With a shovel we traced
out the basic size of the square in the sand.
Then we dug a hole about 35cm. deep. We counted
the clams we had found, then arranged them in
piles according to the species. |

| Eelgrass
Survey 1996 |

|
| |
| When we counted the eelgrass, we
layed down squares of pipe. We picked out the
strands of eelgrass, counting as we went. Then
back in the lab we figured out how much eelgrass
would be in a square metre. |
